  • Arousal
    • Drive Theory
      • Directly proportional - more aroused you are the harder you will perform
      • Level of arousal matches level of performance
      • Core skills must be mastered
      • Dominant response - the way we react to situations
    • Inverted 'U' Theory
      • Performance improves as arousal increases but only to optimum state
      • Once past optimum level, performance will drop
      • Depends on personality of individual
    • Catastrophe Theory of Arousal
      • Relationship between somatic arousal (physiological) & cognitive arousal (worry)
      • Similar to the Inverted 'U' theory - claims that as somatic arousal increases then the quality of performance increases
      • Adds an extra stage - only reach maximum potential at the optimum level only if cognitive arousal is kept low.
    • Drive Reduction
      • Term given to loss of motivation - during performance
      • Initially there is a great drive or motivation to solve new problems
      • Performer will take action to satisfy the drive/motivation - through practice (skill becomes strong and automatic)
      • At this point the drive or motivation to continue performing the skill is reduced
