- Secondary pollutant - from reactions involving pollutants released by human activities
- Nitrogen dioxide broken down by UVA (photochemical reaction)
- Monatomic oxygen reacts with diatomic oxygen to make ozone
- Effects
- Toxic to plants = reduces growth rate in trees/crops
- Breathing difficulties - lead to increased cases of asthma and can be fatal
- Control
- Reduce levels of primary pollutants e.g. nitrogen dioxide in vehicle exhausts
