    • Causes
      • Cause is unknown
    • Autism is a condition that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.
    • Autism is not a single disorder, but a spectrum of closely-related disorders with a shared core of symptoms.

        • Physical access may be limited if they suffer with a disability too
        • Difficulty in adjusting to new environments; e.g. noisy, no quiet spaces, busy etc
        • Lack of adaptations at work or school in order to meet needs, e.g. use of picture boards
        • Poor accessibility to services required/ not knowing about them or not being able to get to them
      • Education
        • May not be able to go to a special school that would suit it's needs more
          • Parents may not have a choice about the type of school they send thei child to
        • Response of children/staff may be discriminatory
        • Expectations of teachers/support staff need to promote learning and development and not limit the child
      • Societal
        • Ignorence
        • Prejudice and stereotyping
        • Misunderstandings/low expectations of ability
        • Bullying/abuse
        • Hate crime
        • Social exclusion
      • Economic and employment
        • Discrimination and prejudice alongside lack of understanding about autism could lead to people not being considered for jobs even though they are a suitable candidate-
        • may be reluctant to take a job for fear of how others will respond to them, or may have unrealistic expectations regarding the roles they can take on.

      • Physical
        • Anxiety
          • excessive thirst, stomach upsets, periods of intensely pounding heart, muscle aches, headaches and dizziness. under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.
      • Social
        • understanding and relating to other people, alongside taking part in everyday family /social life, may be harder for people with autism. 
      • Intellectual
        • learning difficulties and disability.
        • vast majority of the information that an autistic person with higher intelligence absorbs and remembers is factual or sensory
      • Emotional
        • can struggle to make sense of the world which can cause considerable anxiety and emotional stress/difficulty.
        • often find it hard to understand the emotional responses and feelings of others. 
      • Financial
        • Financial impact on carers who cannot work /work less hours due to providing care for a family member whose autism means they have specific support needs.
        • Fewer opportunities for employment due to either the impact of autism or the responses of others (prejudice).
      • On carers
        • It can be an emotional and confusing time for parents and they may find it difficult to make others understand
