    • Barriers to progression
      • social class - lack of financial support = a barrier. Some sports provide financial support = progression to elite level = easier than in other sports where there's little funding
      • disability - 9% of those with disabilities compete in sports. They have a lack media coverage = less well known = less role models
      • Ethnic differences - UK African or Caribbean individual stereotyped to have a physiological advantage in sports requiring speed and power. Over representation in certain sports e.g. football and underrepresentation in others such as tennis
      • Gender - fewer women reach top level. Even when women reach the top level they're paid less. Media focuses on appearance not performance. Not feminine to have a 'muscley' body

      • 3) Performance - Move from basic competence and into a more structured form of competitive sport /club or county level. Implies regular training and coaching with a desire to win competitions and progress in a talent development programmes
      • 2) Participation - sports undertaken for fun and enjoyment = at basic level of competence (ability). Regular performer at club/school level
      • 4) Excellence - reaching top level - applies to performers at national and international levels. Virtually full time activity
      • 1) Foundation - early development pf sport competence and physical skills = all form sports development.Without a sound foundation = young unlikely to be long term sports participants Intro into activity through school PE and rational recreation with parents
