- On 13th August 1961 Berlin woke up to a wall of men with guns. From this moment on the Berlin wall began to be constructed.
- It is still unclear how much Krushchev had to do with the wall being erected.
- In the 28 years very few people crossed from East to West.
- The wall increased stability in the GDR because they were no longer losing their workers and people knew they just had to come to terms with life in the GDR.
- Guards who killed GDR citizens attempting to cross the border received honours and extra pay.
- There were many escape attempts inc. people hiding in the back of cars and using hot air balloons

- Willy Brandt was elected Chancellor in 1969.
- Brandt created Ostpolitik. This was the increased communication between the East and West
- After 1972 Brandt's popularity began to fall. The economy was dropping and terrorism was becoming a problem (1972 Munich Olympics)
- Brandt wasn't very good at dealing with domestic issues.
- Helmut Schmidt succeeded Willy Brandt
- His Chancellorship was mainly dominated with economic problems.
- Did a good job of dealing with the first oil crisis.
- Helmut Kohl succeeded Schmidt.
- He was keen to integrate Germany with the West. Especially France
- The FRG was seen as the model for democracy
- In the GDR a one bedroom flat cost 44 marks a onth, as oppose to 250 marks in the FRG

- Honecker was the leader of the GDR
- Honecker removed a lot of Ulbricht's new economic plan
- Honecker wanted to improve the industry to help improve the living standard
- 70% of the GDR's national income was given to COMECON
- By the mid 70s 60,000 Vietnamese citizens were living and working in the UK
