- 1972 Black Power convention excluded WAs
- Political demands had gone considerably beyond those of mid-1960s mainstream movement.

- Separate juries for black people and protection from police intimidation

- Black Power movement was going back to Washington's idea of 'dipping your bucket'
- Being self-reliant but in a very different way
- Movement had more in common with Garvey's organisation
- Did not attract huge membership
- Heavily influenced by Nation of Islam

- Separatist organisations gave rise to new confidence and pride in being black and sense that white values could be challenged rather than accepted
