Blackpool - The Butler Model
- Exploration
  - Blackpool was a fishing village
  - In 1720, the main visitors were people who did not need to work, who visted Blackpool for the sea
  - There were hotels in 1780
- Involvement
  - In 1781 the first private road into Blackpool was built which allowed more access, but it took a very long time for poeple to get there
  - In 1846 the railway was built into Blackpool which meant that the working class could access it
  - Henry Banks built the first holiday cottages in the 1820’s.
- Development
  - In the 1870's workers were granted holiday time
    - Some mills shut down for a week
  - New Attractions
    - North (1863), South and Central (1870)pier
    - Illuminations (1879)
    - Sea wall (1894)
    - Winter Gardens (1878)
  - Lots of tourists
- Consolidation
  - maximum number of tourists
  - 1936 - paid holiday
  - 1930 - 7 million visitors a year
  - Blackpool was one of Europe's leading holiday resorts
- Decline
  - reptation suffers beacuse of stag and hen parties, younger tourists
- Rejuvination
  - Tries to lower prices

  - Invests in attractions
  - Conference centres
  - make facilities public ownership
  - 2008, the bond hotel, on bond street, has a 14m upgrade
  - In 2009 a 80 million coastal defence scheme has happened over 3.2km of the coast
- Stagnation
  - Ageing facilities and fashions changing
  - 1950's - 17 million visitors and first rollercoaster built
  - 1960's- cheap air travel and package holidays
  - More disposible income
  - 1979 - 1988 - 39 million tourist nights lost
  - 1990's caribbean and asia competition

It is good to see the Butler Model applied to a case study in a format that shows all the stages and some information that is useful and linked to the stages. This is very useful and something that is often asked in exams.

Use this with the Revision Notes here to test your knowledge - great when used together.
