- Bowlby’s maternal deprivation hypothesis
- Effects on development
- Intellectual: delayed speech, poor mental capacity
- Emotional: difficulty regulating emotions and aggression.
- Social: poor social behaviour and development
- Physical: may be malnourished, physically stunted
- Separation vs deprivation
- Separation: short-term periods away from the mother which do not cause harm. If these accumulate, then harm may be done (law of accumulated separation)
- Deprivation: periods away from the mother in which an element of care is lost. This causes social, physical, emotional and e intellectual problems if left unaddressed
- Bowlby’s 44 Thieves study
- Aim: to see if there is a link between affectionless psychopathy and maternal deprivation
- Procedure; participants were interviewed for traits of affectionless psychopathy. Their families were also interviewed to see if there was prolonged maternal separation.
- Findings: 14 of the 44 thieves were affectionless psychopaths. 12 of the 14 had experiences long-term deprivation from their attachment figure.
- 2 of the 44 control group had experiences separation.
- Conclusions: maternal deprivation in childhood has a link to the development of affectionless psychopathy
- Effects on development
