  • Challenges to Tsarist Russia
    • Alexander II assassinated in 1881 by people's will on the way to sign legislation that meant people couldn't be tried without jury.
    • Repression Policies
      • Okhrana was used to bring fear
      • reforming ministers forced to resign
      • Uni fees increased so that only wealthy could attend
      • Statue of State security laws meant people could be tried without jury
      • Press censorship, in 7 years, 14 major newspapers were banned
      • Russification. All official docs were to be written in Russian. All Russian people had to speak Russian and Russian was the only language spoken and taught at school
    • Alexander III linked his fathers reforms directly to his death saying that they threatened Tsarist ways
    • Gov made it virtually impossible for peasants to get education past primary school
    • Alexander III was influenced by Pobedonestsev who believed 'Autocracy, Nationality, Orthodoxy'
    • Land captins were appointed by directly by government. They later became part of the the Zemstva were only landed classes could vote
    • Economic changes
      • Vyshnegradsky 1887 encouraged foreign investments and incentives to move to Siberia
      • Bunge - Reduced peasant tax and started Peasant Land Bank
