- Impacts 7-8% of the population a year
- Major depressive disorder
- DSM-5 says the diagnostic criteria includes...
- Depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities for >2 weeks
- Impaired functioning with respect to social, occupational or educational areas of life
- Specific symptoms, at least 5 of which must be present nearly every day for min. 2 weeks (e.g. change in sleep, excessive guily, suicidal thoughts, etc.)

- Bipolar Disorder
- A mental disorder involving a mixture of depressive and manic episodes
