- Showed that segregation would only be achieved slowly in the south

- In July 1960 Woolworth desegregated its lunch counters
- 1961 - Freedom Rides in the South
- The bus companies agreed with the ruling to desegregate buses
- 1961 - Albany Movement began
- Movement was a failure as many facilities were sold off or closed
- 1962 - Meredith enrolled at the University of Mississippi
- Meredith successfully enrolled in October 1962
- 1963 - Birmingham campaign
- Was seen as important because if segregation could be stopped here it could be stopped anywhere
- 1963 - March on Washington
- Showed that different civil rights organisations could work together for the same aims
- 1964 - Freedom Summer in Mississippi
- SNCC failed to register many black voters
- 1964 - Civil Rights Act passed
- Main points included to stop segregation and promote integration
- 1965 - Voting Rights Act passed
- All restrictions on registration and voting were banned
- 1966 - Chicago campaign
- The campaign failed because it required massive federal funding
- 1968 - Martin Luther King assented on 4th April
- The 'Poor People's Campaign' took place in King's memory but failed without his leadership
