- Client Server & Peer to Peer Networks
- Peer to Peer
- Client Server & Peer to Peer Networks
- Advantages
- Because there is no reliance on a central server, only parts of a network will break down at one rime rather than the central server which will stop all activity
- No network management needed
- High ability users can choose for themselves which resources they want to use
- They are quite simple to set up using wizards by the OS
- Good for home users to share files, printers (etc) as no server is needed
- Home users don't often need strong security
- All PCs have equal access to storage on other PCs, printers, scanners, WAN connections (Internet)
- No central storage
- Often used for illegal file sharing activity because there is no central server to shut down by governments or copyright holders
- Disadvantages
- Computers will run slowly if accessed for files by other users
- Standard PCs are not designed for multiple users whereas servers are
- Backups need to made on each individual computer
- Regular training is required for all users
- P2P networks are controlled by computers & their users, one mistake can hold up the whole network
- High level security cannot be reached
- Designed for limited number of computers only
- Will start to have issues once the number of computers is over 15
- Computers will run slowly if accessed for files by other users
- Each computer has the same status
- No central control
- Connected through a switch
- Used mainly for small groups
- Client Server
- Software is typically stored on the server as an "installation package" so it can be installed quickly on to any connected PC
- All computers have a level of access determined by the user account which is logged in
- A central server holds all the user files
- The server requires maintenance
- A network manager is usually employed to do this
- Separate PCs are connected to the server through a switch
- The server is a power computer with large storage capacity for users files
- Parallel processing to handle rapid responses to multiple requests
- Advantages
- Possible to share files between users and have private files too
- Central backups are possible
- Less likely to fail
- Software updates can be readily rolled out to connected PCs
- Less able users are not able to affect other users through lack of knowledge
- Specialised specification of a server enables users to get fast responses to file and printing requests
- Much higher security is possible
- Only one person needs to be responsible
- Disadvantages
- Expertise needed to manage such a network takes time to acquire and mistakes will affect all users
- Network operating system needs to be able to manage user rights
- This can be complex especially for many groups with different access rights
- Much more expensive due to servers and network managers
