- Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) - Natural England
- Areas of interest because of plants, animals, geological features or land forms
- Not necessarily owned by government or organisation
- Owners have an ideal management plan and activities are rewarded with grants
- If no agreement is made or damage occurs site can be purchased by law
- Activities on sites aren't banned but are controlled to reduce damage
- Examples = Dee Estuary - Cheshire, Isle of Portland -Dorset, Exe Estuary - Devon
- National Nature Reserves (NNRs) - Natural England
- Protect and manage of the most important wildlife areas
- Provides a resource of scientific research and recreation
- Examples = Wern Moss - Shropshire, Hatfield Forest - Essex
- Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) - National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949
- Owned and controlled by local authorities
- Benefit the wildlife and public, protected from damaging activities
- Marine Nature Reserves (MNRs) - Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
- Aims to conserve and provide study opportunities of marine wildlife
- Examples = Lundy Island, Skomer Island
- Special Protection Areas (SPAs) - Natural England
- Protects and manages areas important for rare and vulnerable birds
- Examples = The Solent, Exe Estuary, North Pennine Moors
- Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) - EU Habitats Directive
- Provide rare and vulnerable organisms and habitats with increase population management
- Examples = Dartmoor, Dorset Heaths, Wimbledon Common
- Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) - Natural England
