- DEVELOPMENT OF POLICIES BY LARGE ORGANISATIONS TO MAKE THEM MORE SUSTAINABLE
- THE FOOD INDUSTRY - ASDA/WALMART
- Distribution Centre in Didcot, Oxfordshire
- Now recycles all of its plastic packaging rather than sending it to landfill.
- It has a new baler which compresses the plastic to 10% of its original size so more can fit into lorries
- Result - The plastic only has to be collected once a week rather than 4 times a week. So Asda's carbon footprint is reduced.

- THE COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY - NOKIA
- If every mobile phone user recycled one mobile phone, 240,00 tonnes of raw materials.
- So, Nokia gives information on its website on where to find recycling points and the address to send the phone to if there isn't a centre nearby.
- A GLOBAL COMPANY - GENERAL ELECTRIC
- Monitors water usage and is improving water recycling.
- Much of the company's boilers and cooling towers will be recycled water.
- This is in the hope that by 2012 General Electric's fresh water usage will be reduced by 20% (enough to fill 3000 Olympic-sized swimming pools)
- POWER GENERATION - COAL-FIRED POWER STATIONS
- Coal-fired power stations emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide. These are major contributors to acid rain and climate change.
- Ways emissions are being reduced:
- Raising efficiency from 36% to 40% will mean a drop of 25% in carbon dioxide emissions.
- Fitting Amine Scrubbers in chimneys of power stations will remove 98% of carbon dioxide from the waste gases and 95% of sulphur dioxide emissions.
- In Germany, for example, all coal-fired power stations have scrubbers fitted. This is not the case in low income countries (LICs)
- EXAMPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY IN THE WORKPLACE
- Hotels have a policy of only washing towels if customers have asked so reduced water usage and use less soap powder.
- Large companies provide their workers with different bins to deal with different waste products. This is often done in schools too.
- School pupils are encouraged to turn off lights in rooms that are not in use and computers are all turned off at the end of the day.
- Use of video conferencing to reduce the amount of car journeys.
- The Internet is being used to send information rather than printing out documents.
