- soon IRB men started planning a rebellion hoping it would drive British out of Ireland

- these got captured by the British
- they went ahead without guns so they could be seen as martyrs
- Patrick Pearse said 'England's difficulty is Ireland's defense
- he read the 'Declaration of the Irish Republic' on the steps of the GPO
