Enzyme inhibition

View mindmap
  • Enzyme inhibition
    • Enzyme inhibitor = a molecule that attaches to an enzyme that slows it down or stops it working
    • competitive
      • this isn't permanent and doesn't change the active sites shape
      • The inhibitor is the same shape as the substrate so it can bind to the enzyme reducing the amount of enzyme-substrate complexes formed
      • only slows not stops completely
    • Non-competitive
      • permanent and does change the active site so no enzyme-substrate complexes can be formed
      • the inhibitor binds to the enzyme at the allosteric site and changes the shape of it's active site permanently
      • this stops completely not slows it down
