  • Enzymes
    • Enzymes are biological catalysts.
      • Enzymes are also proteins, and usually denatured above about 45ºC.
        • When denatured, the shape of the enzyme changes and its active site may no longer work
      • Catalysts are substances that increase the rate of chemical reactions without being used up.
      • The place where these substrate molecules fit is called the active site.
      • As the temperature increases, so does the rate of reaction
    • Aerobic Respiration
      • Respiration is a chemical process in which energy is released from food substances, such as glucose - a sugar.
      • glucose + oxygen    =    carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
    • The active site consists of residues that form temporary bonds with the substrate (binding site) and residues that catalyse a reaction of that substrate (catalytic site)
    • The mechanism involved is called the 'lock and key' mechanism. Just as a lock will only accept one key, an enzyme will only accept one substrate.
    • Enzymes have a high specificity for their substrate
    • The binding of the substrate to the enzyme causes changes in the distribution of electrons in the chemical bonds of the substrate and ultimately causes the reactions that lead to the formation of products.
