- European Union Overview
- The UK has been regarded as an 'awkward partner' in the EU. Successive governments sought to defend national sovereignty and opted out of major EU policy developments such as the EMU.
- EU membership has had a significant impact on British politics. Many areas of public policy are now determined by the EU. EU law takes priority over national law. Political parties have experienced damaging internal divisions. Euroscepticism is more prevalent in the British party system, public opinion and the media than in many other EU member states.
- The 2016 referendum vote reflected long-term dissatisfaction with the UK's relationship with the EU. It also revealed sharp demographic and attitudinal fault-lines within British politics.
