- Evaluation of Labelling theory around Crime and Deviance
- Strengths
- It shows that the law is often enforced in discriminatory ways
- This shows that sociologists can then evaluate this and find out what people who are accused of being deviant feel.
- It shows that laws are not a fixed set of rules
- It show's society's attempts to control deviance but instead it it creates more rather than less.
- The agencies of social control by Becker
- e.g. Teachers/Schools/Police Force/ Capitalist society
- The agencies of social control by Becker
- It shows that the law is often enforced in discriminatory ways
- Weaknesses
- This implies that without labelling Deviance would not exist
- although the role role of power is recognised, it fails to analyse the sources of this power.
- Realist sociologists argue that this ignores the real victims of crime
- It fails to explain why people commit primary deviance
- there is emphasis on the negative effects of labelling gives the offender a kind of victim status
- Assuming that victims are passive Victims, of labelling it ignores the fact that individuals may actively choose deviance.
- It leads to the conclusion that someone who commits a crime but is not labelled is not deviant, it also implies that deviants are unaware that they are deviant until they are labelled. HOWEVER most people are aware that they are going against the norms of the society.
