- Identify what is going on and offers encouragement to motivate and maintain effort.
- Positive feedback when combine with praise offers players the extra feel-good factor needed to continue being successful.
- Example - tennis players looking up at their box for encouragement and support.
- Negative
- Identify what is going wrong with the performance, clear and direct error correction, not always most appropriate.
- More experience players appreciate negative feedback as it is faster and provides clarity on what needs to be improved.
- We highlight the attitude or skills that are causing problems and ensure that they are removed
- Intrinsic
- Develop a feel for the performance, where mistakes are identified by the performer themselves.
- This kinesthesis helps us perform, by detecting errors and correcting them during our performance
- Extrinsic
- Information provided by someone or something else, advice offered on errors, types and methods of practice to improve the performance.
- External feedback comes from an external source such as a coach, who can provide information about what to improve and maintain.
- Knowledge of results (KR)
- Concerns the outcome of a performance, was a skill successful or not. It forms an early basis for improvement.
- We know what the result was, the number of Olympic medals won, the result of the match, However it does not tell us how well we performed.
- Knowledge of performance (KP)
- More detail provided about the technique, reasons for success and failure, information used to develop skill further.
- KP provides information on the technique and execution of the skill to make you or your athlete a better performer next time.
