  • Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil
    • Crude Oil
      • Non-renewable Forming very slowly from animal and plant dead matter
      • Mixture of mostly alkanes
    • To convert crude oil to useful products
      • Heating and collecting fractions. Each fraction=hydrocarbons of similar length and properties
      • Crude oil is heated in a furnace
        • Liquid and vapour passes in a tower which is cooler at the top and hot at the bottom
          • Vapour passes up tower via trays until reaching tray that's cool enough= condense to liquid
            • Shorter chain=near top as cooler and they have low boiling points
            • Tar collects at the bottom-supply often exceeds demand
    • Physical process = no covalent bonds are broken. Intermolecular forces which are broken and reformed once cool
