    • Greek music
      • Greece's location means that its music has influences from Europe, Asia and the middle east
        • Greek insruments- outi, toubeleki and bouzouki
          • -Greek music is usually based on modes which is patterns of tones and semitones
            • bouzouki- has a long neck with three or four strings
          • the lyrics are mostly about celebratory songs for weddings, songs telling stories about war and heroism with sorrowful laments.
          • rebekito music- the lyrics focus on social and political issues- this type of folk music
            • Greek music uses traditional music uses string, wind and percussion. Also clarinet, violin,guitar and brass instruments
        • outi- pear shaped with a short neck
          • laouto (lute) looks like a outi but with a longer neck
            • lyra- has three stings and played with a bow. there is two types-
              • cretan lyra and lyra of pontos
                • wind instruments- floyra (a wooden flute) and karamoudza (doubble reed) and bagpipes
            • percussion- daouli- drum with two heads. toubelki- goblet shapped drum- differnt tones created dby hitting the centre or edge with fingers or hands
      • greek folk music is for dancing-
        • they have different rythms- SYRTOS- popular at weddings and festivals. in 4                    4, where the 8 quavers are divided into 3-2-2 patterns
        • KALAMATIANOS- one of the best known greek dances- in 7/8 and the beat is a 3-2-2 pattern
          • ZEIBEKIKO- this is a improvised dance for one person
    • Bhangra music
      • was originally a folk dance
        • fast paced folk music form northern India and Pakistan
          • played at harvest times- it became popular at weddings and celebrations
        • instruments- dhol- doubble headed barrel shaped drum, the two drum hads were hit with one heavy and one light stick to create different sounds
          • polyry thm cross rhythm and syncopation can be created combining rhythms from the two drumm heads
            • the basic rythmmof a Bhangra piece is played on the dhol
              • the most  popular rhythm was the chaal
                • it is a eight note repeated pattern
                  • the quavers are swung and words called bols tell you how to strike the drums- NA- small drum head. DHA means play both and GE  means play the large one
          • the dohlack is played with both hands which allows more complex rhythms to be created
            • singing ihas a small range of notes in bhangra and the lyrics are light-hearted
              • backing singers shout hoi in the backround
          • other instruments included- tumbi, alghoza and sarangi and tabla
      • developed in the UK in the 70s and 80s
        • Asian musicians fused the chaal rhythm to western styles like hip hop and disco and rap
          • they used synthersizers and electric guitars
          • Allap was a successful Bhangra band  and so was sangeeta and sahotas
      • often used in Bollywood films
      • modern bhangra uses music technology such as remixes, sampling, drum machines and DJ effects like scratching vinyl
