- Weather
- Definitions
- Weather is the effect of the atmosphere at a particular place and time, regarding heat, rain, dryness and cloudiness.
- Climate is the description of the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area.
- Microclimate is the climate of a small area, which can be different to the general area.
- How we measure weather
- Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder
- This has a glass ball that focuses the sunrays onto a piece of paper. You then measure the length of the burn against the hourly markings.
- Barometer
- This measures air pressure by recording the force of air exerted on it.
- Anemometer
- This measures wind speed. Cups are pushed around the pole by the wind, the stronger the wind the faster they spin.

- The Grand Canyon
- The Grand Canyon was formed 5.6milion years ago when the Colorado River wore down the layers of rock, making a big hole.
- Impacts of tourism
- The biggest positive impact of tourism because of the Grand Canyon is that 9,800 jobs have been provided. This is good because it provides the locals with more money.
- The biggest negative is that many tribes have been forced to move from their sacred land, this is bad because they have lived there for a long time.

- Tectonics
- Plate boundaries
- Constructive plate boundaries. When 2 plates move away from each other. Makes volcanoes, new land, and ridges.
- Collision plate boundary. When two continental plates meet they both rise, making mountains.
- Conservative plate boundaries. When two plates slide past each other. Makes massive earthquakes.
- Destructive plate boundaries. When the oceanic plate goes under the continental plate. Makes earthquakes, destructive volcanoes, and ocean trenches.
- Structure of the earth
- Crust
- This is the outside layer. There are 2 types of crust-continental (older) and oceanic (thinner). they are mainly made of Basaltic and Granitic, it is solid rock. It ranges from 10-30 miles thick. the temperatures range from -50-50*C.
- Mantle
- This is the second layer of the earth and the thickest, consisting of 1800 miles of semi-molten rock. the average temperature is 3000*C. It is 2/3 of the earths mass.
- Outer Core
- This is the 3rd layer and is roughly 1400 miles thick. It is made up of liquid molten magna, which is mostly iron and nickel. It is probably 5000*C
- Inner Core
- This is last layer of the earth. It is 900miles thick and 5500*C. It is a solid ball of iron and nickel. It is placed under immense pressure.
