    • Landscape
      • 1840 - Gently rolling grasslands & slow flowing rivers
      • North - Black hills - wooded hills surrounded by the 'bad lands' soft rock eroded into shapes
    • Vegetation
      • West - Near Rocky mountains - grass was short
      • East - grew taller (prairie grass)
      • Some river valleys & area closest to the Mississippi - woodland
      • Berries, rootplants, wild fruit grew in places
      • South  - Land dries - Grass replaced with black chaparral & mesquite
    • Climate
      • extremes of temperature
      • Strong winds - blizzard's and freezing cold
      • Summer - v.hot, drying the land & rivers
    • Wildlife
      • well adapted to living in the region
      • wide variety of animals and birds
        • examples; Antelope, Coyote, Deer, Gophers, rabbits & buffalo (bison).
        • Birds examples; Eagles, grouse & hawks
    • Plains Indians
      • well adapted - not a desert
      • hunters - followed Buffalo
      • Summer- moved northwards away from the heat
      • Winter - camped in foothills of Rocky Mountains sheltered from the blizzards
      • Outsiders - Nomads -  did not settle & live in one place
      • They (their opinion) did live in one place, The Great Plains
