- 1840 - Gently rolling grasslands & slow flowing rivers
- North - Black hills - wooded hills surrounded by the 'bad lands' soft rock eroded into shapes
- Vegetation
- West - Near Rocky mountains - grass was short
- East - grew taller (prairie grass)
- Some river valleys & area closest to the Mississippi - woodland
- Berries, rootplants, wild fruit grew in places
- South - Land dries - Grass replaced with black chaparral & mesquite
- Climate
- extremes of temperature
- Strong winds - blizzard's and freezing cold
- Summer - v.hot, drying the land & rivers
- Wildlife
- well adapted to living in the region
- wide variety of animals and birds
- examples; Antelope, Coyote, Deer, Gophers, rabbits & buffalo (bison).
- Birds examples; Eagles, grouse & hawks
- Plains Indians
- well adapted - not a desert
- hunters - followed Buffalo
- Summer- moved northwards away from the heat
- Winter - camped in foothills of Rocky Mountains sheltered from the blizzards
- Outsiders - Nomads - did not settle & live in one place
- They (their opinion) did live in one place, The Great Plains
