- Price of goods had been rising since 1921 but wages had stayed at the same level (this is inflation)
- German workers striked following the French invasion of the Saar so nothing was produced.
- To help strikers the government began to print more money meaning the Germany mark became worthless
- Reparations

- Forced to pay due to the Treaty of Versailles
- Had to pay allies for damage caused by war
- Meant to be paid without the Saar
- Germany's main industrial area which was put under the control of France
- Meant that Germany had no money and the economy was very unstable
- Stopped paying them in 1922
