  • Goal Setting
    • SMART Targets
      • Achievable - goals must be realistic for the performers abilities
        • They feel this is achievable as their times are close to the selection times
      • Measurable - goals must be assessed and therefore need to be measurable
        • They will swim the 50 m freestyle in under one minute
      • Recorded - goals should be recorded so progress can be monitored
        • They will film their technique and compare each week to determine improvement
      • Specific - goals must be clear and specific
        • Athlete attends a Para-swimming talent identification day
      • Time Phased - goals should be split into short term goals leading to long term goals
        • They will aim to do this in 6 months, before the next talent identification day
    • Types of Goals
      • Process-orientated goals
        • e.g. to ensure front crawl technique is correct
      • Performance Goals
        • e.g. running 100 metres in 10 seconds
      • Outcome Goals
        • e.g. to win the 200 metre race
    • Influence on Performance
      • Performer can become increasingly motivated to learn
      • Improves persistence when a task is difficult or failed
      • Success can increase confidence and self efficacy
      • It increases the effort applied by the performer
      • Goals can help break performance into manageable tasks , controlling arousal and anxiety
      • Directs the attention of the performer onto the required task
    • Goal setting can develop positive self perception and reduce anxiety prior to and during exercise.
