- Basis of Discrimination
- Race
- The ethnic group that an individual belongs to, e.g. white, Asian, black, mixed race.
- Culture
- A group of people who share the same ideas, customs, language, dress, beliefs, etc.
- Disability
- A physical or mental impairment that has a substantial impact on a persons ability to do normal daily activities.
- Social class
- Someone's economic or educational status, where people are grouped into hierarchical social categories
- Age
- There can be negative perceptions of some age groups, such as older adults, teenagers
- Gender
- Whether someone is male, female or transgender
- Sexual orientation
- Examples include gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual and asexual
- Religion
- A system of beliefs and values, such as Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, Quaker
- Race
- Discriminatory practice
- Prejudice
- This is a negative attitude or dislike of an individual or group, often based on ill- informed personal opinion.
- Indirect discrimination
- This is where a policy, practice or rule applies to everybody but has a detrimental effect on or disadvantages some people or a particular group.
- Stereotyping
- This is where generalisations, which are often offensive and exaggerated, are made about a particular group of people, such as older people etc.
- Direct Discrimination
- This involves intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences
- Labelling
- This is a negative approach that identifies people as members of a particular group, with the assumption that they are all the same.
- Abuse
- This refers to a negative and harmful way of behaving towards another individual or certain group of people.
- Bullying
- This involves threatening, intimidating, humiliating or frightening others, it is repeated behaviour intended to physically or psychologically hurt.
- Prejudice
- People affected by discriminatory practice
- Individuals who require care and support, such as patients, older adults, people with physical and sensory disabilities, children with autism, babies, individuals who have detemia.j
- Family, friends and relatives of individuals who use care services.
- Practitioners, for example nurses, GPs, dentist, physiotherapists, teachers, child care workers.
