- What is happening on the dance scene today?
- Embraces cultural diversity, choreographic process is more collaborative, works reflect heavy political messages, alternative approaches to movement and choreograph, unrestricted music choice and new forms of staging.
- Key Practitioners: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Akram Khan, Matthew Bourne and Hofesh Shechter.
- Akram Khan- embraces cultural diversity and stylistic fusion between Kathak and Contemporary
- Khan collaborates with Cherkaoui in shifting towards individuality- through eclecticism of and Idiosyncratic- personal dance language.

- What is Modern dance- Modern dance is an expressive broad genre of western dance starting from the US in the late 19th early 20th Century.
- Martha graham- purpose was to illuminate the life and struggles of the human experience, paying particular attention to humans’ inner nature. Her dances were dramatic expressions of the conflict between the individual and society in an attempt to look at the internal motivations of humanity. Pushed modern dance.

- Isadora Duncan- Duncan dance is free-flowing and appears spontaneous; has a sense of energy and grace that radiates from the solar plexus; reflects the rhythms of nature; is danced to the great classical music; and is a state of mind- Matthew Bourne.

- X6 dance collective- covered a wide range of movement technique- dancers were encouraged to develop their own style from this- influenced experimental factors .
- Dance Umbrella- Gave professional artists a change to present their work on a public platform- their aim is to nurture dancers and innovate practise.
- The influence of The Place- LCDS= Richard Alston, Siobhan Davies, Sally Potter who was a film-maker and Fergus Early whom all pushed alternative approaches to dance, cherishing their own individuality. LCDS embraces cultural differences and similarities- they select diverse students, developing the ICDSIB.
- Dance Umbrella- Gave professional artists a change to present their work on a public platform- their aim is to nurture dancers and innovate practise.
- X6 dance collective- covered a wide range of movement technique- dancers were encouraged to develop their own style from this- influenced experimental factors .

- The influence of Sadler's Wells-
- Alistair Spalding transformed Sadler's wells into a contemporary dance theatre in 2005.
- Announced six associate artists- Matthew Bourne, BalletBoyz, Jonzi , Wayne Mcgregor, Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
- Through these artists, ticket prices rose by 40% within four months- further encouraged interest in the dance scene.
- Alistair Spalding transformed Sadler's wells into a contemporary dance theatre in 2005.
- Key Turning points that helped transform the ICDSIB
- Teresa Early- founded an organisation called Ballet-makers-Ltd was one of the first Independent established companies. It gave people the freedom to create their own work, opening much more push in the individuality of choreography.
- Both Rambert and the Royal Ballet joined for the opportunities to experiment whilst LCDS used the Ballet-makers to present some of its work, possibly a real significance into the push of the dance scene.
- LCDS founded by Robin Howard pushed the cultural and social diversity- embracing originality and alternative approaches to dance- collaboration with filmmakers, artists and the public. Techniques such as Cunningham and Limon were taught, but students were encouraged to push their own style.
- Teresa Early- founded an organisation called Ballet-makers-Ltd was one of the first Independent established companies. It gave people the freedom to create their own work, opening much more push in the individuality of choreography.
- Influences of the Practitioners affecting the development of the ICDSIB
- Akram Khan- heavy influence of culture and religion- His family originates from Bangladesh and he trained in Kathak - Perhaps he took the approach of the X6 collective.
- Matthew Bourne- heavy influence of past narratives and dance theatre-challenges the audiences perception by using current societal issues and reflecting them in using past ballets, making dance more 'relatable' to a post- modern audience.
- Influence of Frederick Ashton- character-based ballets which pushed the experiment of theatre and dance combined-Ashton's style encompasses many modes – mime, pantomime, pure classicism, popular and folk dances
