- Why did people move the the US
- SPACE - America had large plains where farm settlements. Growing cities had plenty of room for expansion
- WAGES - Farm workers and skilled people were paid more in the US.
- LAND OF FREEDOM- People had the right to practise their own religion and live however they wanted. The American Bill of Rights (1791) allowed freedom of speech, press and religion.
- In Europe many people were being persecuted for their religion.
- UNEMPLOYMENT IN EUROPE DUE TO MACHINERY
- EUROPE WAS OVERCROWDED
- ABUDANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES
- Why was new immigrants resented?
- Fear of Communists and political ideas
- People wanted America to be isolated from the world due to WW1
- Would take lots of jobs for lower wages
- Many ghettos were formed and people blamed them for crimes
- Many immigrants were not white/protestant Christians many were Catholic, Orthodox or Jewish.
- What laws were passed?
- 1917 Literacy Test - Immigration test to show they know English. They were charged $8
- 1921 Emergency Quota Act - They took in 3% of each nationality
- 1924 National Origins Act- Reduced to 2% and they let more people in Northern Europe
- 1929 Immigration Act- restricted to allow only 150,000 people per year.
- The red scare - the fear of communism
- Hysterical reaction from Americans due to the Bolshevik revolution
- There were many protests and strikes due to poor working conditions and many thought this was the start of a revolution.
- There was a series of bombings made by Anarchists and many feared it was made by communists
