      • An infection is the presence of microorganisms causing damage to body tissues

      • Bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection and parasitic infection
        • Bacterial Infection- Bacterial survival & growth depends on host’s defence mechanisms & bacteria’s ability to resist the defences
        • Viral Infection- minute particle that is capable of replication but only within living cells. Viral infections include; common cold or cold sores.
        • Fungal infection-  Fungus – simple organism that lacks the green pigment chlorophyll
        • Parasitic infection- Parasite – any living thing that lives in or on another living organismProtozoa – single celled parasitic organisms
    • What are the countermeasures against infection?
      • Antimicrobials e.g. antibiotics and active immunisation e.g. vaccines
