- John Rawls
- Veil of ignorance
- Considered what a fair society looks like when you take yourself out of the equation. If you didn't know your place in society, your class or wealth, you would chose to live in an equal society.
- "No one knows his place in society, his class position or social status, nor does anyone know his fortune... the principles of justice are chosen behind a veil of ignorance"
- Theory of Justice
- Behind the veil of ignorance we would create a society which would guarantee each individual a life worth living
- This would be achieved by giving everyone equal right to as much liberty and only allowing social inequalities which are linked to meritocracy
- Modern Liberal: React against free market capitalism, led to many inderviduals being so poor they could not be called free
- Thought individual freedom was linked to helping humans flourish. Developmental indervidualism
- Believed in positive freedom. Leaving the poorest alone does not make them free. Wanted to help people reach their potential. Believed in an enabling state
- Believed there should be formal equality and equality of opportunity between all individuals.
- Believe in Keynesian economic management where the government borrows money and pumps it back into the economy during a recession
