- Language and Prestige
- Prestige:This means status. For example, someone with more power is seen to have a higher prestige
- We code shift depending on the prestige. For example, when talking to Mr A, you would talk in a politer manner because of his prestige as he has power over you
- Overt Prestige: This is when prestige is done or shown openly
- Covert Prestige: When you don't openly acknowledge or display
- Depending on the prestige we will code shift, alter our register and adjust our lexis depending on who we are talking to
- Key Terminology:
- Omission/ Elision: Sounds disappear from words. This could be clipping the final consonant (dropping 'g' or 'h'.) Example: "I', anging"
- Colloquialism/ Slang: language that is not formal. Example: "That old geezer's havin a laugh"
- Taboo Language/ Vulgarism
- Assimilation: sounds are blended together so that you don't heat clear letters. Example: Dohm
- Minor sentences/ Ellipsis: sentences that are grammatically incorrect. Example: "What the hell."
