- Legal Aid is the provision of assistance for people who are unable to afford legal representation and access to the court system
- The Director of Legal Aid agency decides if a person qualifies for legal aid
- Can be provided for civil cases such as : discrimination, housing,immigration,welfare benefits and education
- It is available when a case is serious and a person cannot afford to pay fees and if the case is determined to be eligible. Examples include if a person is at risk of losing their home
- Legal aid isn't available for medical negligence, trespass to a person, land or property
- Legal aid will only be granted to an individual who is determined to be financially eligible, so those who need it most can benefit from it
- Organisations who have a contract with the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) can provide legal aid services. This includes solicitors, law centres and Citizens Advice Bureaux(CAB)
- If your gross monthly income is over £2,657 or disposable income is more than £700 you are not eligible for any civil legal aid.Also if you claim certain benefits you will not be eligible
