- Malware
- Malware is code that is designed to cause harm or gain access to a computer system
- There are several ways that malware can get onto a device - for example being downloaded in an email attachment or hidden in a removable media device
- Types of actions of malware
- Deleting or modifying files
- Locking files-ransomware encrypts all the files on a computer. The user receives a message demanding a large sum of money to be paid in exchange for a decryption key
- Displaying unwanted adverts - adware caused p[op-up ads that cannot be closed
- Monitoring the user - spyware secretly tracks actions like key presses and sends info to the hackers who may be able to work out bank details and passwords
- Altering permissions - rootkits can give hackers administrator-level access to devices
- Malware can spread between devices in different ways
- Viruses attach to certain files and users spread them by copying infected files and opening them
- Worms are like viruses but they can self-replicate without any user help, meaning they can spread very quickly. They exploit weaknesses in network security
- Trojans are malware disguised as legitimate software. Unlike viruses and worms, trojans don't replicate themselves - users install them not knowing they have a hidden purpose
