- MARXISM
- think laws are in place to protect property owners
- KARL MARX
- argued the legal system was the means by which 1 class kept another class under control
- explanations for crime divided into 3 sections
- 1) CAPITALIST SOCIETY CRIMINOGENIC
- crime an in-built aspect of society
- crime a rational response to competitiveness & inequality of life
- GORDAN- not surprising the WC commit crime but that they don't commit more
- 2) LAW REFLECTS INTERESTS OF RULING CLASS
- CHAMBLISS- legal system doesn't represent a value consensus but are modelled on ruling class interests
- BOX- what is seen as serious crime is socially & ideologically constructed
- BOX- crimes involving huge corporations given less attention than WC crime
- SNIDER- sees passing of health & safety laws as something the gov does when pressured by outside agencies - these provide a smoke screen
- 3) SELECTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT
- official statistics give off impression that crime is mainly a WC thing, but this is largely due to SLE
- CHAMBLISS- one rule for rich, one rule for poor, higher social class less likely to be prosecuted for crimes
- PEARCE- biggest crimes are committed by ruling classes- 'crimes of the powerful'
- EVALUATION
- MC crime underrepresented in crime stats- white collar crime harder to detect
