      • Ten months later WW1 has been happening for six weeks. Rudyard is recruiting at a mass meeting and delivers a patriotic speech.

    • Our English soil will be squashed and squeezed until I cries out in pain
    • The blood of our mothers, fathers... will drench th streets and paint our rivers red
    • Like the germs of a disease... will slip into our midst contamiiatingour blood
    • Our towns will be renamed, every book, newspaper... will be written in German first
    • But there is of course a pernicious minority who do not intend to inconvenience themselves for any consideration
    • We must demand that every fit young man come forward and enlist and every young man who chooses to remain at home, be shunned by his community
    • Our unity, our strength, and our courage can save us from destruction
