- My boy jack - act 1 scene 4
- Summary
- Ten months later WW1 has been happening for six weeks. Rudyard is recruiting at a mass meeting and delivers a patriotic speech.
- Rudyard
- We are a people
- A people whose soul is as strong and old as the English oak, and as constant as the brook that cuts deep into the soft valley soil
- Our English soil will be squashed and squeezed until I cries out in pain
- The blood of our mothers, fathers... will drench th streets and paint our rivers red
- Like the germs of a disease... will slip into our midst contamiiatingour blood
- Our towns will be renamed, every book, newspaper... will be written in German first
- But there is of course a pernicious minority who do not intend to inconvenience themselves for any consideration
- We must demand that every fit young man come forward and enlist and every young man who chooses to remain at home, be shunned by his community
- Our unity, our strength, and our courage can save us from destruction
