- Summary
- On the western front in 1915 we are introduced to three soldiers – McHugh, Doyle, and Bowe. It is raining heavily, and they are talking about the conditions of the war.
- We learn John is lieutenant. John tries to help treat Bowes trench foot. McHugh explains his dislike for Rudyard and the soldiers discuss the anticipation/anxiousness about their first time ‘going over’.
