- Summary
- It is now five minutes to zero hour. The soldiers explain how they don’t actually know what is about to happen or what to do.
- Bowe is still shaking and can’t get prepared. John tries to remain professional and guide his men. It suddenly goes quiet as John counts down.
- Bowe is still struggling – no one helps. John takes off his glasses and dries them a final time.
- We gain an insight into John’s mind and realise although he is acting as though he is not fearful he is ‘frightened’. John tries to comfort himself by thinking of home comforts and his family.
- John blows the whistle. There is a blackout the mark the end of act 1.
