  • Nervous and peripheral systems
    • Central command
      • Brain
        • responsible for integrating most sensory information and coordinating body function
        • This happens through conscious and unconscious actions
        • maintenance of homeostasis
        • complex functions such as thinking and feeling are based in the brain
      • Spinal Cord
        • serves as a conduit for signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
        • control simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input from the brain
      • Other parts of the brain
        • The Cerebellum
          • managing posture, balance, and importantly for us the coordination of movement
        • Hypothalamus and pituitary gland
          • located very closely together, and their function is linked
          • Hypothalamus
            • regulation of body temperature (thermoregulation)
            • release of hormones
            • maintaining daily physiological cycles (circadian and diurnal rhythms)
          • pituitary gland
            • The hypothalamus controls the pituitary
            • secretes or controls other glands that secrete incredibly important hormones
          • This connection is termed the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis
