  • Networks
    • LAN
      • A LAN is a network in small areas such as a school, office or building. It exists within a small geographical area
    • WAN
      • Wide area networks connect separate LAN’s over a large geographical area to form a network of network
    • The internet
      • No single organisation owns the internet it is a network of networks – some privately owned, some public
      • Every internet-connected device is assigned an IP address
      • IPv4 – 1970s 32 bit, enough for 4 billion devices?
      • IPv6 – 128 bit, enough for 340 trillion trillion unique IDs?
      • Routers and web servers are permanently connected to the internet and so will have static IP addresses
      • A domain name is a human friendly form of an IP address
      • URLs are the complete web address of a particular web page, image or other resource
    • Wired vs Wireless
      • Wired
        • Copper
          • up to 100m
          • up to 10Gbps
          • susceptible to electrical interferance
          • Used to connect devices on a LAN
        • Fibre Optic
          • Up to 80km
          • up to 100 Gbps
          • immune to electrical interference
          • used for long distance data traffic
      • Wireless
        • 100m max
        • WIFI, Bluetooth, Zigbee, RFID, NFC
        • generally low power consumption
    • network speeds
      • formula for length of time it takes for a file to reach its destination
      • Time(secs) = file size(bits) / data transfer rate(bps)
    • Topologies
      • Star
        • each computer or client is connected individually to a central point or node
      • Mesh
        • Each computer is connected to at least 1 other computer
      • bus
        • each node is connected to a main cable called a bus
