- NUCLEAR weapons PROMOTE PEACE & STABILITY
- ABSENCE OF NUCLEAR WAR
- Nuclear weapons are rarely used, due to the destruction they bring.
- There has never been a nuclear war, and conventional war between states with nuclear weapons.
- This shows that nukes are mainly used a symbol of power, rather than something to use.
- This has created a balance of power- E.g. CW- thus creating peace
- EFFECTIVE DETERRENCE
- Deterrence is the ultimate motive for acquiring nukes.
- This is the prevention of war through fear of MAD
- Therefore there is a low possibility of a state achieving a first strike nuclear knockout.
- This is especially because nuclear powers invarioubly seek to develop a second strike capability
- This makes a nuclear fought between 2 nuclear powers virtually unthinkable.
- This makes nuclear weapons symbolic as it is unthinkable that they will be used- deters war
- Deterrence is the ultimate motive for acquiring nukes.
- INTERNATIONAL STABILITY
- Nuclear vertical proliferation has tended to preserve the balance of power, and the balance of terror
- This has ensured peace because it preserves international stability
- Horizontal proliferation has been gradual, where nuclear club has grown.
- Nuclear vertical proliferation has tended to preserve the balance of power, and the balance of terror
- NUCLEAR STATESMANSHIP
- The possession of nuclear weapons brings a sense of responsibility and caution.
- E.g. Regional tensions between India and Pakistan are much less likely to lead to war as they both possess nuclear weapons
- Therefore, this shows that nuclear weapons are more symbolic
