  • Outsiders
    • Lennie is an outsider in the novella as he is mentally impaired
      • At the time in 1930's America little sympathy was given to those with disabilities
        • Lennies animalistic characterisation shown in "he walked heavily, dragging his feet like a bear drags his paw"tells the reader that he has a lack of control.
          • The fact that Lennie also has a lack of independence, with George acting as a parent to him and keeping him out of trouble compares him to a child and so further develops this image.
      • the notion of Lennie being an outsider is reinforced by the fact that George makes an excuse for his disability, saying he "was kicked in the head by a horse" when he was a child and "he ain't bright".
        • The fact that his behaviour needs explanation confirms that he was seen as an outsider at the time.
    • Lennie
      • Lennie is seen to have lost George his job in Weed as they were "run out" of the place after Lennie felt a girls dress, when she screamed he became scared and refused to let go. The girl accused him of ****** her and "the guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie"
        • the fact that Lennie does the same to the girl in Weed as Curley's wife shows his lack of intelligence as he is unable to learn from his mistakes.
    • Candy
      • Candy is an outsider as he is old and has lost a hand, this makes him physically weaker then the other men on the ranch and unable to work.
        • This makes him volnerableas he could be fired at any time and as he says "i won't ave no place to go, an' i can't get no more jobs".
      • Candy is only able to do emasculating jobs like sweeping the years as he only has one hand.
        • This means that he does not spend as much time with the other men and has no companion but his dog, which Carlson shoots
          • Candy dead dog draws a parallel to his own character, shown in His ancient dog lifted its head and peered about, then painfully got to its feet".
      • Finally, candy dream is also crushed as he wants to get in on Georges and Lennies dream shown in "s'pose i went in with you guys. thats three hundred an' fifty i'd put in"
        • When Lennie dies this dream essentially dies with him and therefore both Georges and Candy's dreams are shattered too.
    • Crooks
      • crooks is a stable buck and a black man, this means he is and outsider as he is unlike everyone else and
        • The reader can tell that Crooks is used to being treated in such a way as when lennie asks him "why ain't you wanted" he responds with "because I'm black"
          • Finally, curleys wife reminds the reader of how volnerablecrooks is on the ranch by saying "i could get you strung up on a tree so quick its not even funny
            • Crooks is also called a "stable buck"by the other men which refers to a male dear, suggesting that he is their lesser and not equal.
      • as 1930's america was a very racist place he experiences extreme marginalisation and abuse.
      • Racism and lynching was very common at the time, this reminded people like crooks that they were never safe in society.
