  • Restoration theories
    • Physiological patterns associated with sleep are produced by the recovery processes of the body
    • Oswald
      • People recovering from trauma e.g. drug overdoses sleep more time in REM sleep
      • Skin cells grow more in sleep. This can be linked to increased release of growth hormones during deep NREM sleep.
      • Concluded that REM was for recovery of brain while NREM for the body
      • He predicted that burning up resources during the day will result in longer sleep
      • sleep deprivation will effect brain function and behaviour
    • Effects of sleep deprivation
      • People can endure long periods of sleep deprivations with no effects
      • Can effect mental functioning but the effects vary per person
      • afterwards, only a small proportion of sleep lost is recovered
      • Recovery is concentrated on the deep stages of NREM or REM
    • Horne's restoration
      • Sleep- deprived participants given cognitive tasks could maintain reasonable cognitive functions
        • eventually deprivation produces effects on memory and attention
      • moderate sleep deprivation appears to have few if any effects on the body
      • When allowed to sleep, deprived participants make up far more of the REM or NREM sleep that they have lost
