    • Why has Rio grown?
      • - it has become a major industrial, administrative, commercial and tourist centre
      • attracted migrants from: - other parts of Brazil - other countries - the language attracts - people come for business and industry
        • This results in a racially mixed population
    • Social
      • Health Care
        • Challenges : only 5% have a local family health clinic
          • Solutions: made a favela (13 km to nearest hospital) - doctors take health kits this treated diseases
      • Education
        • Challenges: shortage of nearby schools - lack of money, shortage of teachers - low pay, poor training
          • Solutions: people volunteering to be teachers - giving school grants to poor families - making a money available to pay for free lessons - opening a private university
      • Water Supply
        • Challenges: no access to running (lost through leaky pipes)
          • Solutions: seven new treatment plants were built and 300 km of pipes were laid
      • Energy
        • Challenges: suffer from blackouts - lack of electricity
          • Solutions: installing 60 km of new power lines and a new nuclear generator and a hydro electric complex
    • Environmental
      • Traffic Congestion
        • Challenges: steep mountains, roads can't be built, due to high crime levels - people travel by car
          • Solutions: expansion of metro-system, make new roads and make roads one-way only
      • Water Pollution
        • Challenges: rivers are polluted, open sewers, 200 tonnes of raw sewage, 50 tonnes of industrial waste and ships dumping oil into the bay
          • Solutions: 12 new sewage works and 5 km new sewage pipes
      • Waste Pollution
        • Challenges: steep slopes, few roads - hard for waste collections lorries - waste is then dumped
          • Solutions: power plant and use methane gas (biogas) this consumes 30 tonnes of rubbish a day and produces electricity for 1000 homes
    • Economic
      • several things have contributed to rio's economic growth : industrial areas, large population, port facilities and financial sectors.
        • due to all of this, there will be more jobs, larger population  and challenges :

        • we could improve the employment rates in rio by bringing more industry into there, this creates more job opportunities

          • favela unemployment rates are at 20% with most people working in the informal economy
            • informal economy: employment outside of the official knowledge of the government
          • people work as street vendors, drivers, laborer's, maids and sewing
          • poorly paid sector (less than £60 a month) and irregular
          • about one third of rios 3.5 million workers dont have a formal employment contract
          • many dont have insurance
          • dont pay taxes
          • government receives no income
