- Prolonged drought causes forest stress, meaning younger trees die
- Impacts on wetlands
- Wetlands cover 10% of the Earth's landscape, they consist of marshes; saturated land
- Wetlands are important as temporary stores in the water cycle, and also have high biological productivity, supporting a variety of wildlife
- Drought means limited precipitation, meaning the vegetation on the wetlands will deteriorate
- Less infiltration/percolation will cause the water table to fall, reducing water in groundwater stores
- 1991 Ramsar Convention on Wetlands has listed 1800 wetlands of international importance to try and conserve them
