- SENATE AND MAGISTRATES UNDER AUGUSTUS
- THREE FACTORS INFLUENCED HIM: the experiences of Julius Caesar, his own conservative inclinations and his need for cooperation.
- INFLUENCE OF JULIUS CAESAR
- He had learnt from Casear's mistakes: Casear had shown disrespect towards the senate. augustus wanted to reconcile the senate by:
- restoring its dignity, making it a more worthy body than it had been in the republic.
- realised that the traditional desire of the senatorial order to compete for highest positions in the state could not be frustrated.
- He had learnt from Casear's mistakes: Casear had shown disrespect towards the senate. augustus wanted to reconcile the senate by:
- ATTEMPTS TO RETAIN REPUBLICAN FORMS:
- Augustus was a conservative but he preferred to retain republican forms as long as they were efficient. when he felt that change was necessary he went about it with political tact- he did not want to offend members of the senate.
- Its members still held annual magistracies and chief military positions- retained control of treasury, administered peaceful provinces, voted honours to Augustus and had right to choose new princeps and either honour/ condemn him after death.
- ENORMOUS ADMINISTRATIVE TASK
- this was ahuge task that was almost impossible to do alone: Maecenus commented: 'the cause of our troubles is in the multitude of our population'
- WORK NOT POWER SHARED WITH SENATE
- Augustus needed to share the workload with the senate. they cooperated- dividing legislative, executive and judicial functions between them.
