- Prehistoric Surgery
  - Fine and delicate stone tools have been found, often made of flint and obsidian, which show that some surgery was feasible.
  - They would combine basic practical methods like setting broken bones and bandaging with spiritual explanations of illness and cure.
  - Witch doctors,Shamans and 'medicine men' are frequently credited with the ability to both cure and inflict illness.
- Ancient Egyptian Surgery
  - Priests kept the Books of Thoth', which contained the accepted treatment and spells. Carvings in the temple of Kom Ombo, c. 100 BC, show a variety of surgical instruments.
  - They could perform simple operations such as tumor from the skin and cataracts from the eye.
  - Egyptians had metal tools which made it easier to perform such surgeries. An Egyptian papyrus written around 1600 BC outlines some simple surgical procedures.
- Ancient Greek Surgery
  - Greek Medicine was influenced by Egyptians. They had temples of healing called Asclepions.
  - Hippocrates saw the healthy body as being in balance, he thought that illness was an imbalance of the elements. Blood-Spring, Yellow Bile- Summer, Black Bile- Autumn and Phlegm-Winter.
