- What's it about?
- It is about a disastrous battle during the Crimean war between British cavalry and Russian forces
- The light brigade were ordered to advance into a valley, which was surrounded by enemy soldiers
- The light brigade soon realised that the order was a mistake and they were likely to head to their deaths by following it,yet they went anyway
- The cavalry were only armed by swords;whereas the enemy had guns and cannons
- Many of British soldiers were killed, the poem wants to keep the memories of the bravery alive and honoured
- "Cannon to the right of them ,cannon to the left of them, cannon in front of them"
- Tennyson uses anaphora to emphasise the artillery surrounding the soldiers
- Allows reader to identify with the soldiers, emphasises their courage and valour
- "All in the valley of death"
- Alludes to the psalm 23 from the New Testament of the bible
- Faith makes people braved when they are faced with death
- In this time ,the majority of people would have been of a Christian faith
- "Into the mouth of hell"
- The personification used makes us realise it's like saying there "trapped" in the jaws
- The personification used makes us feel asif the things around him were "alive" made them more exaggerated gave them animal characteristic so could have a vision of the event
- "Into the jaws of death"
- Treats death as same thing as hell, death is described as predator;like an animal attack
