- preparations started in the summer of the previous year
- tragic playwright who wanted to participate needed to present a synopsis of 4 plays

- when the playwrights were chosen (3 tragic and 3 comic playwrights) they all had to quickly rehearsal all their plays

- DAY ONE
- The procession called pompê happened
- Started outside the city and then made its way to the temple of Dionysus, where a sacred bull and many other animals were sacrificed

- DAY TWO - FOUR (play days)
- everyday started with 3 tragedies in the morning, a satyr play in the early afternoon, and then a comedic play after
- On Day Two, the priest of Dionysus sacrificed a piglet in the altar in the orchestra. Then, 3 important presentations were made
- Parade of tribute - Athens allies had to pay Athens by this time. The money that was paid was laid on the orchestra for the audience to see.
- proclamation of honours - a herald announced the names of the citizens who had done an outstanding service for Athens and awarded the, with a crown
- parade of orphans - the children who had lost their fathers in battle had their education paid as respect
- The audience
- the audience members needed a token to be able to watch. The rest of Athens paid for the token of those who were too poor to afford it.
- the audience would have had to bring their own cushions and food . They would have also had to bring their own clothes to protect themselves from the weather
- DAY 5 - Judging
- Judging was highly democratic to avoid bias
- 1 - Before the festival began, the council wrote the names of each of the 10 tribes in the city
- 2 - the lists of each tribe was sealed in an urn and then stored in the Acropolis
- 3 - On the first morning of the plays, one name from each tribe was chosen randomly. Each chosen person had to swear impartiality and then was made a judge
- 4 - The judges watched all the plays with the audience. They would have probably been influenced by the audience's reaction to each play.
- 5 - On the fifth day, each judge wrote his order of merit on a tablet
- 6 - The Archon then chose 5 random tablets, and which ever playwright got the most votes won
- Review
- any citizen who wanted to complain about how the city Dionysia had been run could
- If their complaint was valid, then the Archon could be fined
- If the complaint was not valid, then the Archon was crowned the thank him for his efforts
