- August 1915 Russian army retreated from Poland. Tsar becomes commander in chief of the army
- there were rumours that Alexandra was running the country while her husband was on the front line
- the tsarina was born in Germany, rumours circulated that she was a German agent
- there were also rumours that the family were under the influence of Rasputin. He had a reputation of being a drunk womaniser
- 1916 there were lots of ministers that were fired very quickly. Tsarina and Rasputin were accused of being responsible and picking favourites
- December 1916 Prince Felix Yusupov worked with aristocrats and politicians assassinated Rasputin
- The murder of Rasputin failed to change public opinion
- Zemgor
- this was an organisation that co-ordinated a voluntary support group
- they were in control of things such as:
- production of uniforms, medicine and munition
- distribution of food
- aids to refugees
- Medical care
- organising military detachments
- Prince Lvov a member of the Kadets was responsible for its organisation
- Resources were limited and they only contributed 5% to the war effort
- the progressive Bloc
- this was a political alliance of Duma deputies united in the desire for constitutional reform
- the Russian army was forced into the great retreat of 1915 in part due to a munition crisis
- There was mounting pressure for the Tsar to recall the Duma in 1915
- Duma was eventually recalled in 1915
- the new government was able to manage the war effort effectively
- the Tsars response
- he refused to collaborate with the progressive bloc and Zemgor
- the Tsar dismissed the Duma in 1915 less than a month after opening it
- Nicholas refused to work with Duma and the Zemgor weakening Russia's ability to organise the war effort
- the tsar was becoming more and more unpopular as there was no sign of a military breakthrough
- moderates were critical of the Tsar when the Duma reassembled in 1916
- The Tsar withdrew from the government, and moved his military headquarters to Stavka
